Why Obtain Temporary Residence in Spain

Temporary residence permits allow legal stay in the country for more than 90 days with possibility of extension up to 5 years. With residence permit you obtain foreigner identification number (NIE), ability to open bank account, access healthcare and social security systems. Also includes right to free movement within Schengen area, signing long-term rental agreements and obtaining mortgages. After 5 years of continuous residence you can apply for permanent residence (larga duración) and eventually for citizenship.

Main Types of Temporary Residence Permits

1. Non-Lucrative Visa (No Work Rights)

Ideal option for individuals living on passive income or savings. Requires proof of income at least 400% of IPREM indicator (€28,800 annually) plus additional 100% per dependent. Card issued for 1 year with subsequent renewal for 2+2 years. After one year possible to change status to work or entrepreneurial.

2. Remote Work and Digital Nomad Visa

Based on Startup Law with latest 2024-2025 updates. Requires income from 200% of minimum wage (€2,368/month) plus additional 75%/25% for family members. Visa issued for up to 1 year through consulate, with possibility of residence permit up to 3 years. Mandatory conditions: remote work for foreign company, maximum 20% income from Spanish clients, higher education or minimum 3 years relevant experience.

3. Employed Work

Requires employment contract with Spanish employer. First authorization issued for up to 1 year and ties to specific region and position. From 2025 after first renewal (total 4 years experience) geographical and professional restrictions are lifted.

4. Entrepreneurs and Highly Qualified Professionals

Includes self-employed individuals and business owners. UGE Fast Track program provides accelerated processing for highly qualified specialists, intra-company transfers and innovative startups. Standard scheme 1+2+2 years with reduced processing times.

5. Study and Research Programs

Student status allows residence in country more than 90 days and work up to 30 hours weekly. After graduation possible to change status to work residence within 3 months. Time spent on student visas doesn't count toward naturalization residency requirement.

6. Legalization by Exceptional Circumstances (Arraigo)

Social arraigo: 3 years residence in Spain plus employment contract or business plan. Labor arraigo: 2 years residence plus minimum 6 months official employment. Family arraigo and training program established by 2022 reform. First card issued for 1 year.

7. Family Reunification

Available for spouses, children under 18 and dependent parents. First card validity matches residence card duration of inviting resident.

8. Investment Visa

From April 3, 2025 applications for visas through property purchase from €500,000 are not accepted. Existing permits remain valid until expiration.

Application Procedure

Consular stage for applicants from abroad includes obtaining NIE and entry to Spain. Next step is appointment at Oficina de Extranjería for biometric data collection and plastic TIE card issuance. Renewal available online 60 days before expiration date.
