Biometric card for legal residence and work in Spain - everything you need to know
TIE (Tarjeta de Identidad de Extranjero) is a biometric plastic card following the ID-1 standard that certifies the legal status of foreign citizens in Spain. The card displays your personal NIE number, fingerprints, and the validity period of your residence permit. Since 2020, TIE has completely replaced paper-based residence documents.
| Citizen Category | Requirement | Alternative Documents |
|---|---|---|
| Non-EU citizens | Mandatory | TIE |
| EU/EEA citizens | Green certificate for stays over 3 months; biometric TIE — recommended | Green certificate + optional biometric TIE |
Temporary TIE: valid according to initial residence permit (typically 1–2 years).
Renewal: apply 60 days before expiry or within 90 days after — otherwise fines up to €500 may apply.
Permanent TIE (larga duración): after 5 years of legal residence, initial card valid for 5 years, subsequent renewals for 10 years.
Registration certificate (green) mandatory for stays exceeding 3 months. Required documents include passport, proof of employment/income or self-employment, and health insurance.
Biometric TIE (optional). Increasing number of autonomous communities offer exchange of green certificate for plastic card: more convenient for car rental, banking operations and future EES transition. Uses EX-23 form, fee approximately €12.
Can I work without TIE with a valid visa?
No. Visa grants entry rights; legal employment is only possible after obtaining TIE.
How long does TIE processing take?
Average processing time from application to receipt is 4–6 weeks (varies by region and province).
Does TIE need replacement when changing address?
No, you must notify Comisaría de Policía at your new residence address.
TIE is not just an identification document for foreigners, but your access pass to full-fledged life, employment and digital services in Spain. Ready to obtain your card without complications?
